FATHER & SON RETREAT
June 7 – 9, 2019
Retreat for fathers & sons (ages 9 & up)
This camp is a 2 night/3 day retreat that will give fathers and sons (ages 9 and up) the opportunity to refresh their relationship; learn principles from God’s Word on competition, self-esteem, and communication; and have fun together on the beautiful grounds of Rock Eagle. The camp offers great coaching on the mats for the sons, while “the dads” learn to become better husbands and fathers.
Registration opens on Friday afternoon. Camp runs from Friday evening to 12pm on Sunday.
Former NCAA College Champion, & NCAA D-I national runner-up for Slippery Rock State U. in PA. Jack now works in campus ministry, after a long and successful college coaching career. During his 18 years as head coach at the University of Oklahoma, Coach Spates was honored as “Big 12 Coach of the Year” 3 times and was “NWCA National Coach of the Year” in 2006. He produced 53 NCAA All-Americans and 6 national D-I champions. He has mentored a number of today’s best college coaches, (working as his assistants), including Mark Manning at Nebraska, Teague Moore at American University, Brian Smith at Missouri, and Rob Koll at Cornell. When head coach at Cornell, Jack started their transition into a nationally ranked program. Jack has an M.Div, and lives with his wife, Barby, in Oklahoma, where he is a highly sought-after speaker / Bible-teacher.
Former 2x NCAA Champion for U. of Iowa, and winner of the Olympic Gold Medal (at the ”Light Heavyweight” class – 220lbs.) in the 1984 Olympic Games. Lou’s twin brother, Ed, also won a Gold Medal in the same Olympiad, making them the only twin brothers in history to win Gold in wrestling during the same Olympic games. After a stint in the U.S. Army and helping coach at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Lou received his Master’s in business adm. from Penn State. From there Lou went into the banking business. Today Lou manages specialized banking teams across the Mid-West. He and his wife (Kim) live in Milwaukee, WI, and have three grown children.
A 2x GA state champ; Graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he was a 4 year starter; Captain of the West Point team in 1987 (the only West Point team in history to win the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Assoc. tournament); 3x Placer at the EIWA championships (4th, 3rd, 2nd) & EIWA Finalist in 1987; 2x qualifier for the NCAA Championships. Cliff served in the U.S. Army as an officer and an Army Aviator. Cliff is a Gulf War Veteran and recipient of numerous battle decorations, including The Air Medal with “V” for valor in Combat Operations during Desert Storm and the Meritorious Service Medal. Today Cliff is a successful businessman and a community wrestling coach in Carrolton, GA. Cliff and his wife, Amy, have 2 grown children and one in college.
Josh is a former NCAA All-American for U. of Pennsylvania; trained at the OTC for one year; and was the asst. head coach at U. Penn for 7 yrs. He started the wrestling program at Shorter U., where he built a solid winning D-II program. Today Josh and his wife, Jenn, live with their four children in the Rome, GA area, where Josh is a teacher & head coach at Gordon Central HS.
Tony Van Horn
– A former NJ state champ; two-year starter for Ohio State University, and a Big Ten placer. Coach Van Horn coached McEachern H.S. (Powder Springs) to 6 Georgia HS state team championships. Today Tony is a financial planner for the Van Horn Group, at UBS Financial. Tony and his wife, Kelley, have two children (one in high school & one in college).
A 3x placer in the NEIWA championships for Springfield College, & competed at the D-II NCAA’s. After a year of coaching at Springfield, he wrestled for the Athletes-in-Action from 1976 – 1980, qualifying for the USA Team Training Camp 3 times (2x in freestyle & 1x in Greco-Roman). Bill has a Master’s of Divinity, & is Director of FCA Wrestling in Georgia. Bill & Kay have 4 grown sons.
$325.00/ father & son couple, and $150 for each additional wrestler.
